Fashion addict, Émilie Mercier was destined to follow in her father Marc Mercier’s footsteps. In 1986, he opened the very first M/2. 35 years later, the store has become a family affair with Émilie as co-owner of the banner’s 4 stores. In 2018, after years of offering only menswear, Émilie decided it was time to make room for women and become a reference for both herself and her father. Mission accomplished and met with a determined woman, mother and wife.
Could you describe M/2 in just a few words?
M/2 is above all a family business in Quebec that has been around for over 30 years. Our aim is to offer a variety of unique, upscale and trendy collections for both men and women.
What does the name M/2 mean?
M/2 is for Marc Mercier, the founder and owner of the company.
How did M/2 come about?
This store was my father’s childhood dream. He founded M / 2 in 1986 with a first location in Mont Saint-Hilaire (now closed). Here we are 30 years later with four locations, three concepts and two generations running the business. I am very proud to follow in my father's footsteps with my brother.
What motivated you to open a location at Rockland Center?
From being well established on the South Shore for several years, one question would often come up: when will a boutique in Montreal? In doing our research, we found the environment at Rockland to meet our needs perfectly.
What part of your job are you most passionate about?
Every day is different. Working in fashion isn't always easy, but when you're passionate, it's the best job in the world. Several aspects of my career bring me to life; taking the family business to another level, the business trips for purchasing and meetings that I have had over the past few years.
What is the best advice you would give to future entrepreneurs?
Always be in solution mode, constantly innovate and surround yourself with the right people. It’s good and important to be able to question yourself, it allows you to take a step back from a situation to make the right decision and in the end be able to move forward.
How do you choose each collection/product offered at M/2?
We attach a lot of value to the quality of fabrics and products. We ourselves select the collections and items that will be distributed in our stores. We listen to our customers and to the latest fashion trends so that we can always offer the best.
Why is it important to buy local?
It’s so important for local entrepreneurs to support one another. Our current situation has opened my eyes to the fragile state of some retailers and the importance of encouraging local. We owe it to ourselves to show up and be there for each other.
Nothing but good things! We have several television partnerships, new associations with corporate groups and we are constantly improving our web platform in order to make our collections even more accessible to people who cannot come to the store.
