When it comes to fashion, Rockland is a trendsetter. The same can be said about our dedication to environmentally responsible management. But going green isn’t just a trend – it’s a commitment, a value firmly rooted in our day-to-day activities. From procurement to waste management, maintenance and administration, sustainable development is at the heart of Rockland’s management and operations. Our goal is to minimize our carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to our environment. For example, we have introduced initiatives to reduce heat islands, of which there are still too many in Montreal. Among Montreal-area shopping centres, Rockland boasts the greenery per sq. ft., with more than 200 trees and an abundance of shrubs, perennials and annuals, for a total of 15.2% of green space.
Our sustainability efforts are part of a highly structured and ever-expanding environmental management program. They have been rewarded with a number of prestigious honours and certifications, as well as a wide range of achievements that we are proud to outline in this report.
We monitor our environmental performance very carefully using a program that assesses the results in the six categories covered by BOMA BESt, namely energy, water, waste reduction, emissions and effluents, indoor environment and our environmental management system. This approach makes it possible for us to set specific goals and determine how well we measure up to them. Every year since 2004, we have introduced new initiatives to reduce Rockland’s carbon footprint. This conviction, which we share with our retailers and customers, has taken the form of a well-defined approach that is constantly adapting to changing needs and yielding concrete results.
Rockland adopts a structured approach and delivers concrete results, which we evaluate on a regular basis. Over the years, new initiatives have been added to the already comprehensive array of environmentally responsible measures. The result is a remarkable performance that continues to improve year after year. Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of our administration and the retailers who are the heart and soul of the property, we have obtained a number of certifications and honours that put Rockland among the sustainable development leaders in the Quebec shopping centres.
