Charles Sabbagh, Local Tailor

In this series, our collaborator Carolyne Brown meets the Local Talents—flagship stores in the heart of Rockland Centre. These interviews are all about sharing, sincerity and proximity. We invite you to enter their world and discover who they are.

Let’s meet Charles Sabbagh, owner of Charles Le Tailleur

How did your business start?

I have been working in tailor shops since I was 10 years old. When I was young, during the summer holidays, my mother would send me to the tailors to learn the trade. In 1971, I left my country, Syria, and moved to Canada. When I arrived in Montreal, I took a design course to learn the techniques. I opened my shop in Rockland Centre in 1989, so I’ve been here for 32 years.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to face in your career as an entrepreneur?

The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially difficult — but it’s starting to get better. People are returning to the office and with spring just around the corner, several events, such as weddings, are being planned.

What is the biggest lesson that your business has taught you?

I understand the woman’s figure because I have custom-made dresses for a long time. I know exactly where to alter each garment to make it fit properly.

What makes your brand stand out?

I’ve been in this business for a long time. I have several years of experience and my customers are satisfied with my work.

What are your most popular services?

Honestly, all our services are popular. Customers come back to see us because they know the quality of our services. No matter the type of event, we will know how to meet their needs.

Tell us a funny anecdote or event from your entrepreneurial journey.

I once served a client who came to shorten a pair of trousers and he gave me measurements that seemed far too small … only for me to realize later that the alteration was for his son!

What keeps you passionate about your field?

I’m still here because I truly love my work. Some of my customers are surprised to see me still here. I have great relationships with them — they’re my friends, we share some good moments together and we talk about our lives.

What do you hope that people remember about your company?

Throughout my career, I’ve only rarely had issues. My customers are always happy with my expertise, they’re loyal and always come back to my shop.

What advice would you give to a future entrepreneur?

Be patient. If customers aren’t happy with my service, I remain patient and listen to them to solve the problem.

What are your most popular services?

Honestly, all our services are popular. Customers come back to see us because they know the quality of our services. No matter the type of event, we will know how to meet their needs.

What is your best-kept secret?

The best secret … is me! (laughs)

What could we wish for you in the future?

Simply put, remaining healthy — that’s the best thing anyone could wish for. I wish great health to my family and all my customers … because my customers are the best
